Waste Not Want Not
I hate throwing out food. It must go back to my childhood when my mother would remind me of all the starving children in Africa. I never thought I would say this, but I say the same thing to my kids, though I broaden the geographic region to children all over the world including right here in the United States of America.
Unfortunately, there are families right here in my own town who are struggling to afford groceries. So I try not to throw food away. This is not an easy task. Seriously, just make a mental tally each time you are throwing more than a bite of food away. You will be surprised at the volume of food you throw away each week. I know that I used to hate to throw things away so much that I would talk myself into believing that I would eat it or use it later which only put off the inevitable until the food I was throwing out was barely recognizable.
I find that having a plan for the food I bring in the house is the single most effective way for me to avoid waste. If I only buy the things that I plan to cook to feed my family then I am forced to prepare those specific foods. What ends up happening is that I use most all of the food that I bring into the house. This does two things. It saves me money on my grocery bill and it makes me feel good not to have to throw food away.
